Engineering refers to the branch of science and technology concerned with the design, building, and use of engines, machines, and structures.

According to the ‘Science and Engineering Indicators 2018 report’ of National Science Foundation in the USA, India was on the worlds #1 position in producing engineers and science graduates. Studies indicate that India produces 1.5 million engineers per year from over 4000 different institutions and universities, that is more than the engineers from the USA and china combined.

A number of engineering, applied engineering and sciences all over India imparting undergraduate and graduate courses all over India. The national institute of technology (NITs) and Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) are among the top engineering institutes in India, also have branches all over India in different states.

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT)

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is among the most reputable institutes of technology in the world as well as in India. IITs are autonomous public and research universities in India, which means that they have the freedom to govern it or control its own affairs. Making it one of the most recognized and leading engineering educational institute worldwide.

The top four engineering colleges within India were IITs, in accordance with the outlook India’s list of top engineering colleges in 2017. IIT Delhi was the highest-ranked IIT internationally, ranking 172nd in the QS World University Rankings of 2018, followed by IIT Bombay, Madras , Kanpur and Kharagpur, namely.

In the 2019 QS World University Ranking, IIT Bombay was ranked highest, followed by IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati .

Admission to undergraduate B.Tech and integrated M.Tech programs are through JEE Advanced .the students are then initially sorted out by the JEE Mains which is conducted by the NTA.

Admission to most postgraduate courses in IITs can be done through various written entrance examinations such as GATE (for M.Tech.), JAM (for M.Sc.) and CEED (for M.Des.).NIT and  is among most reputable institutes of technology in the world.

Each NIT is autonomous, like the IITs and the diffrent NITs of diffrent states are linked to the each others through a common council (NIT Council), which oversees their administration. All the NITs are funded by the Government of India.

These institutes are among the top-ranked engineering colleges in India and have one the lowest acceptance rates of around 1 to 2 percent.

Admission to most postgraduate courses in IITs is granted through various written entrance examinations such as CEED, JAM & GATE.

National Institutes of Technology (NIT)

The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) located in India is a public technical and research universities. The national institutes of technology are listed among top the most reputable institutes of technology not only in India but worldwide. Each NIT is autonomous and is linked to one another through a common council (NIT Council), which oversees their administration. All the NITs throughout India are funded by the Government of India.

These institutes are among the top-ranked engineering colleges in India and have one of the lowest acceptance rates of around 1 to 2 per cent. There are a total of 31 NIT’s all over India in located in different states of India.  .The individual NITs, have been functioning as autonomous technical universities and hence can draft their own curriculum and functioning policies.

The admission to undergraduate programs of all the NITs is done through the entrence examination -JEE-Main but since 2017 onwards eligibility criteria was updated which allows the students to get admission by also attaining 75% in HS or equivalent results or being in the top 20% of the respective board. The examination is objective by nature and is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) from the year 2019.

In 2020, National Institutional Ranking Framework ranked twenty-two NITs in the top 200 in engineering category among which are NIT Tiruchirappalli , NIT Surathkal and NIT Rourkela namely

NIT offers various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and admission to most of the programmes is done through entrance exams. The most popular among the undergraduate programmes are B.Tech and B.Arch while MBA and M.Tech are the popular postgraduate programmes. Other programs such as Bachelors-Masters dual degrees and Doctoral degrees are also available.
